Community Food Pantry

COVID CHURCH POLICY

Council and other interested persons met on Sunday, August 22nd, to discuss church policies related to the increased numbers and the Delta Variant. We shared meaningful discussions and some interesting ideas to keep the church open while keeping everyone safe within its walls. Some had ideas about worshipping in the sanctuary again and about enjoying music safely in the sanctuary. There will be more information to come related to these possibilities.

The consensus of this meeting is to keep doing what we are currently doing: Masks are to be worn while in the church and we will practice social distancing. We will have outside services when we can; however, during bad weather, services will be held in fellowship hall where rows of chairs are spread out and are set with one, two, or three chairs for family units. Windows will be opened and fans will be used to aid in air movement.

We are looking forward to a time when we can worship as we did in pre-Covid times and that is our ultimate goal. The current uptick in cases in the U.S. is something we will pay attention to and act accordingly. We ask that you continue to be patient with this process.

UCC appeals for $100,000 for disaster-beleaguered Haiti

A UCC Haiti Appeal seeks to raise $100,000 for immediate relief and longer-term recovery for the thousands of people in Haiti who are reeling from sequential disasters.

These include the deadly, destructive 7.2 earthquake August 14 in western Haiti, and Tropical Depression Grace, expected to make landfall in the same region August 16-17. The resulting flooding and mudslides are likely to add misery to the earthquake zone and to hinder the search and rescue of survivors.

Hundreds (nearly 1,400 as of August 16) are confirmed dead and additional thousands injured due to the eathquake.

The UCC is working with Global Ministries, Church World Service and the ACT Alliance among other partners, all of which are currently assessing the situation for damages and needs.

UCC Global H.O.P.E. team leader Joshua Baird was in touch with the partner networks on August 16 and said that the ACT Alliance reports that more than 60 percent of the people of Haiti have been impacted by the disaster. Both the ACT Alliance and Church World Service have spoken about “significant infrastructure challenges,” with road closures due to civil unrest compounded by earthquake damage. 

Immediate needs include water, due to the corruption of water tanks, and first aid. They note that there are not enough hospital beds in existing, structurally safe facilities. “People are being treated in hospital yards – or dying there,” according to Global Ministries’ bilateral partners CONASPEH (The National Spiritual Council of Haitian Churches) and House of Hope, Baird said.

Other challenges facing Haitians include COVID-19. Vaccination of health care workers and people over 65 only got started in early August. There’s also the political and social disruption following the assassination of the country’s president in July.

From our Moderator
The church has recently learned that 2 attendees of the Pride funeral on Saturday, July 24th
have tested positive for Covid. As of this writing we do not know the date of the positive tests). As you know, we require masks to be worn in the sanctuary and in Fellowship Hall. Masks may only be removed in Fellowship Hall to either drink or eat. Also, all windows in the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall were open during the funeral and reception.

The Maine CDC has advised that if you attended the funeral and wore a mask and/or had been vaccinated, there should be no concern.

Tuesday, August 3rd, is the 10th day from the date of the funeral and crucial time period for
infection; therefore, we felt it was prudent to advise our congregation in the event that anyone in attendance has experienced cold-like symptoms or worse. If so, please contact

Stillspeaking Daily Devotional – United Church of Christ Forms of Assistance

And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. – 1 Corinthians 12:28 (NRSV)

As a coach working with pastors, I often close a session with a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the person I’m coaching, for the gifts and talents God has given them for ministry, and for the ways those gifts are being used and developed for the good of God’s kin-dom. They are inspiring preachers, fine administrators, dedicated educators, and compassionate pastors, but rare is the one who excels at all these roles all the time. Whether they partner with colleagues or work collaboratively with church leaders, one of their most important tasks is to identify and support the gifts of others for the good of the church and the world.

Paul, in his letter to the church at Corinth, points out that we all have different capacities and that they are all needed in our faith communities. My favorite mentioned in verse 28 is “forms of assistance.” It brings to mind the volunteers who organized a Pet Pantry at the UCC church in North Yarmouth, Maine, providing dearly needed help to lower- or fixed-income people in the neighborhood. Not only did they see the need, they inspired others to care and to contribute time, funds, and material goods. Vision, compassion, generosity, and practicality were the gifts given to them by God.

What is your gift? How are you using it? Believe me, someone needs what you have been given and what you have to give.

Holy One, we thank you for the capacities you have given us. Help us to see what is needed and to use our strengths to serve you. Amen.

News from the Missions Committee

Dear Friends,

                 Just a quick update of what has been going on at the Missions Committee.  10%, $7,500, of Pat’s gift to the church was designated for the Local Missions Funds.  Committee members meet and decided that the funds should help those in Maine with food or basic need insecurities.  With lots of discussion and research, we decided to send $1000 to five Maine organizations.   The folks receiving the funds have sent wonderful, moving thank you notes.  Pat would be so pleased.

$1000 Maine Needs—P O Box 4174, Portland ME 04101.  They strive to help people meet their basic material needs by providing clothing, hygiene products, household items and other necessities in an environment of dignity and compassion.  Both their website http://www.maineneeds.org and Facebook page Maine Needs have a lot of information about what they are doing.

 $1000 Food Shepherds Food Bank PO Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211.   The $1000 will provide 3000 meals @ 33 cents per meal.    Their website is http://www.gsfb.org.

 $1000 Machias Food Pantry, 9 Center Street, Machias. ME 04091.  The funds will be used to build a larger facility as the need in the area is growing.

 $1000 Harrison Food Bank, PO Box 112 Harrison, ME  04040.  The Food Bank provides food to those in need in Harrison, Waterford and surrounding areas.  Currently they are feeding 500 families per week.  During the pandemic, they have waived the paperwork for town requirements to get food because no one should be hungry.

$1000 to the Passamaquoddy Tribe in Perry, Maine.  The funds will be used to purchase winter clothing for the children.

The remaining $2,500 will be used for Thanksgiving and Christmas giving.   Peace and Prayers, Tracy

AROUND and ABOUT

So…..what’s happening at our church, you might ask?   Certainly we are not back to normal at this point. We are trying to stay within the latest Covid-19  guide-lines, but it’s surprising how normal Sunday worship is. Yes, we are in the Fellowship Hall which we usually are this time of year.  All the windows are open, and the fans are on high! Folks are respecting a discreet distance from one another. And an oft heard question is, “are you vaccinated?” It seems like everyone is except the younger folks who keep their masks on.   It seems quite safe. Peter is at the piano and we are singing.  This could all change in a heartbeat as the Covid-Delta Variant is taking hold everywhere.  Don’t throw your masks out yet!

Kathy W. has arranged for Sunday service coverage until Pastor Nancy returns and they, Pastor Joe, and Pastor Ed,  have given us some excellent worship services. We have had 3 funerals in the last 6 weeks and Lois K. has really worked hard and put in many, many hours to see that these events are “up to NYCC standards” even though not much has been done in our kitchen as far as food prep is concerned. The families have been so understanding of the restrictions under which we are working. A lot of setting up and tearing down of Fellowship Hall, but a willingness on everyone’s part, especially the families, to help with this has been much appreciated. This past Saturday I went to the church about 8:30ish to check on something (the funeral service was at 11:00) Lois was already there. I went back to church to take the mail in about 3:30 and Lois was still there!  A huge shout out of thanks to Lois. Lois does have some willing and able helpers with these events.

It’s hard to use the word lawn when talking about the green, brown, yellow stuff growing around our building, but with George B.’s tender care, mowing trimming etc., the grounds are looking quite good. George, thank you so much for mowing and also for your daily mouse/snake patrol. Lyn appreciates your diligence!

Speaking of Lyn! Under very awkward conditions Lyn has been critically instrumental in keeping the church operating in its usual “do it right” mode. She has had extremely little use of her right arm after shoulder surgery, and this on top of an abundance of extra work, extra bulletins, accommodating 4 different pastors, bookkeeping chores, weekly newsletters, and other usual stuff she never said “I can’t do this”. She accepted my offer to be her right arm on the computer upstairs as she kept up her financial responsibilities, and I have never pushed anyone’s patience buttons as far as I did hers. She never said a word, but I knew how trying it must have been. I’m not proficient on a computer with 2 good arms!

The Trustees are continuing to plug away at their “needs to be taken care of” list. The Deacons have had extra duties with the extra services. Missions is keeping up with pet pantry and was so pleased to help 5 organizations in the state with a financial gift from the money we received from Pat Field’s will.

And last but not least, you folks are being so faithful with your financial support. This time of year sometimes can be a bit dicey with the bottom line, but thanks to you, our finances are OK. I’m not going to brag on this too much, just incredibly thankful for your support.

Happenings at Church The parking lot will be used for parking for a wedding on Saturday, July 17 starting at 5 pm.  Guests will be shuttled to the venue. All State Paving have been granted the use of our satellite parking across the street as the paving of route 115 gets going.  They will use the space for staging when they get to this end.  Possibly a three to four week time frame on this.

Let’s Celebrate! We will be celebrating Ernie and Sharon Clark’s 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, July 24 after church with cake and ice cream.  No gifts please.  Cards would be lovely.

Memorial Service
A memorial service for Jeanne Golding will be held at NYCC on Saturday, July 10th at 10 am, followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall. Following CDC Guidelines, anyone who is not fully vaccinated please wear a mask.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize those who helped to make this year’s Strawberry Festival a huge success.  Through the generosity of several monetary contributions from outside and inside the church, all of our expenses were met prior to the festival and we were able to net $2,100.00.

Youth Group
Youth Group will not meet today. Youth Group will meet next Wednesday, June 9 from 4-5 pm at the church.

Missions Missions put together 20 toiletry and cleaning buckets for Maine Needs based in Portland that will go to whom ever needs them in the state of Maine. “Maine Needs is a grassroots organization, powered by a growing collective of volunteers. We know how resilient people are, but not all of life should be about overcoming adversity. We aim to meet people on the hill they climb and ease stressors by rallying the heart of the community to provide basic needs”. You can read more about them online or on Facebook.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL NEWS
Strawberries plants are blooming with hope for fabulous berries in June!

The strawberry festival will be held on Saturday, June 26 from 1-3 pm.

The following is a list of dates to remember and also to review and see if you can help!!

Thursday, June 24 Pie plate and berry pick up at the church from 4-6 pm.
Prepping of berries during this time frame also.

Friday, June 25 set up in the fellowship hall 4pm.

Saturday, June 26

10am (weather permitting), set up of outside seating and EZ-up awnings
Prepping of sliced berries

Noon Those working on the festival arrive to double check your station and understand workflow.

1-3pm Festival

After 3 pm Clean up crew

NOTE: We will be following the current CDC guidelines for the festival.

Pie Recipes

Thank you for baking a pie or pies for the Strawberry Festival. We are including recipes for your use or you may have a favorite of your own. We would appreciate two-crust or lattice-top baked pies. Please, no refrigerated pies. Label the pie box (S) for strawberry or (SR) for Strawberry Rhubarb.

Strawberry Pie
Bake at 350, 1 hr. until golden brown
1 quart strawberries
Mix together and sprinkle over fruit:
3/4 sup sugar
4 Tbs. flour
Pastry for a 2-crust pie

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie
Bake at 350, 1 hr. until golden brown
2 cups strawberries
2 cups rhubarb
Mix together and sprinkle over fruit:
1/13 cups sugar
1/3 cup flour
Butter top of mixture
Pastry for a 2-crust pie

News from the Office
Lyn, our Church Administrator, will be out of the office from June 7 to June 17 for shoulder surgery. While she is out, the office will be covered from 8:30-10:30 am Monday-Wednesday. Pastor Nancy will be in the office on Thursdays from 10:00-12:00 pm(not confirmed). The phones and email will be checked during this time.

CONFERENCE DUES
This is the time of year that our church must pay its conference dues. Conference dues are based on the number of members we have in our congregation. The per member dues is $18.00 for the Maine Conference and the Cumberland Association. If you haven’t done so already, the church would welcome payment from each member in this amount if you are so inclined. Thank you in advance.
