Little Christmas Please join us for the North Yarmouth Congregational Church celebration of Little Christmas on Sunday, December 11th after services.   Little Christmas is a Swedish tradition. Families gather together to decorate the tree, share a meal, and exchange small handmade gifts. You’ll find handmade decorations, artisan crafts, and wintertime treats such as gingerbread and cookies. Christmas traditions in Sweden focus on good food and good company. And while old traditions get modern twists, the importance of spending time together remains at the heart of the celebrations.   Each person/family makes an item (or two) to gift to one another. The gift can be edible ~ a few cookies, chocolate pretzels, candy, granola, or crafty ~ ornaments, painted soaps, etc.   The idea is to give one and receive one. And everyone leaves with just a little Christmas.

A Child’s Christmas in New England                  Rev. Dr. Paul A. Day I confess. I LOVE Christmas! I love almost everything about Christmas. I love the lights and decorations. I love the music – both secular and spiritual. I love the food – cookies, baked goods, and our Swedish smorgasbord. I even enjoy shopping at the Mall (a little bit) and the busyness of the season (to a point). I love giving and receiving gifts. I love the Church and worship during Advent and Christmas. I even enjoy the occasional Hallmark movie (mostly to make fun of them). I love precious memories and holding onto cherished traditions – and making new ones!!! If you asked people about the “meaning of Christmas” you’d likely get some of the things I’ve mentioned, and, of course, its deepest meaning in the miracle of a Holy Birth! The Word Made Flesh. Emanuel—God-with -Us! Dylan Thomas’s A Child’s Christmas in Wales (written the year I was born) relates the wonderful memories of a simpler time through the eyes of a young boy. At first the boy is disappointed that Christmas brings rain instead of snow, but is delighted when his grandfather gives him a snowglobe. The story is nostalgic but not overly sentimental. Christmas is a time for children and for many people, for memories of childhood. Simpler times!!! I still think of one of the best Christmas presents I ever received – a jar of home-made applesauce from my MorMor. (One of my brothers got a jar of her pickles; I forget what she gave my other brother.) A “best gift ever” because it was intensely personal and made with love.  “One time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.’” Matthew 18:2-5 What does it mean to have child-like faith, be humble as a child? Some people might say that child-like faith simply accepts, without questioning. I don’t think those people have ever spent much time with real children. Children question everything, “What are you doing? Why? . . . Why? . . . Why? . . .” No. A child-like faith is definitely a questioning faith. I think the humility Jesus calls for is that of a sense of openness to discovering new things, and especially a sense of wonder at the miracles and mysteries all around us. I think again of the miracle of the Holy Birth! The Word Made Flesh. Emanuel—God-with -Us! I try to make a point to take a little longer in my daily devotions during this season, to pause and contemplate God’s great Love. One of my favorite Christmas carols captures it well:    I wonder as I wander, out under the sky, how Jesus the Savior did come for to die    for poor ordinary people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander, out under the sky. Christmas Pageant Rehearsal We are in need of volunteers for the Christmas Pageant.  This is a narrated program, so there is no dialog and no lines to learn.  Rehearsals will take place on December 11 and 18.  The pageant will be performed on Christmas Eve, December 24 at the 5 pm family service.  Please, come join us!

NYCC  Street Ministry Update Caroline and I are going into our cold weather mode as of November and will stay with that plan until warm weather returns …..can we say April ? The menu will be hot breakfast sandwiches and hot coffee. This worked really well last year. Missions is supporting us with this plan. We won’t be giving out as many meals as we do when it’s warm, but the folks do like these treats.  If you are so inclined we could always use financial help with this project  OR  we are hoping you will put together hygiene bags  (they don’t have to be large bags) which could include small items, small being the operative word, such as a bar of soap, sani wipes, toothbrushes/paste, deodorant, shaving gear, you get my drift…….and perhaps a wrapped candy bar AND they really like chocolate, always puts a smile on their faces.  You don’t know how much your moral and or financial support is appreciated. Just know that it is!   JeannePS   Hygiene bags can be left in office or brought to church on Sundays. We’ll  just give them out as they come in. Our trips to Portland are scheduled for the last week of the every month.

Masks are optional at NYCC but if you are not feeling well, we would appreciate your staying home, in particular for a Sunday worship service as the service can be seen on YouTube. If you do test positive for Covid-19 and you have minor symptoms, then you should isolate for 5 full days (day of symptoms is day 0, isolate for 5 full days thereafter) on day 6 take two antigen tests in a row spaced 48 hours apart and if they are both negative you can remove your mask. If you have a moderate case or severe case (needing to be hospitalized) please refer to the Maine CDC guidelines general information relating to Covid-19.

Christmas Fund Special Offering The Christmas Fund has been caring for active and retired clergy and lay employees of the United Church of Christ for over 100 years, providing emergency grants, supplementation of small annuities and health premiums, Christmas “Thank You” gift checks each December to our lower-income retirees. This year, we rejoice at the opening of possibilities for gathering and worshipping together again, as we anticipate the good news of great joy at Christmas. Still, challenges remain for many of our pastoral leaders who continue to experience loss of income as congregations struggle with budget shortfalls. Please show your continued gratitude for our active and retired UCC clergy who need our support by giving generously to the Christmas Fund this year.We will take this offering on Christmas Eve at the 5pm and 11pm services.

Tack, O Gud – Thanks to God for My Redeemer                   Rev. Dr. Paul A. Day  One of my favorite hymns is a hymn of Thanksgiving from the Swedish Pietist tradition. It was written by August Storm, a Salvation Army officer. Each stanza begins with “Thanks” and expresses gratitude to God for something. But, in the words of Oscar Lovgren, “There are no cheap commodities in the thirty-two thanks found in the song.” Storm thanks God for “dark and dreary fall” as well as “pleasant, balmy springtime”; for “pain” as well as “pleasure”; for “thorns” as well as “roses.” Storm wrote this hymn before a severe back ailment that left him painfully crippled, but just a year before his death he wrote another poem thanking God for the years of calm and quiet and the years of pain. My that spirit of gratitude fill us this at Thanksgiving and always. Storm’s hymn was translated into English by Carl Backstrom, and set to a tune composed by J. A Hultman. The latter was known in Sweden and America as the “Sunshine Singer.” He served as pastor of Bethlehem Covenant Church in Worcester, Massachusetts, during and following World War One. Council Meeting This is a reminder that the Council will meet on Thursday, November 16 at 6:30 pm in person at the church. Celtic Advent  Christmas displays started popping up in many stores as early as September, becoming ubiquitous the day after Halloween. Christmas music blasts over loudspeakers and radios. Many of us say or think, “Please. Let us get through Thanksgiving first.”   Black Friday to Christmas Eve day is too often a frenzy of holiday shopping, baking, parties & other activities. Then, on Dec. 26 all the Christmas music & holiday cheer comes to an abrupt halt. The focus turns to New Year’s and beyond.   Many people have forgotten that the 12 Days of Christmas begins on Dec. 25th. And the season of Advent — a time of spiritual preparation for Christmas — is ignored.   For most Christians Advent begins on the 4th Sunday before Christmas — that’s Nov. 27th this year. And that is what we will observe in our worship services. But in the Celtic spiritual tradition Advent begins on Nov. 15th, with a full 40-day countdown to Christmas (a parallel to the 40 days of Lent preceding Easter.)   Either way, Advent is a period of waiting, of anticipation. It is not a passive waiting, however; it is a time to step back from the frenzy of the commercial secular season. Santa’s Workshop Fair Cookie Walk The Santa’s Workshop Fair is fast approaching on November 19th, and now is the perfect time to break out your favorite recipes and begin baking up a storm to delight our patrons for our Carol’s Cookie Walk and Baked Goods tables.  Decorated sugar cookies are always a big hit but even the simplest chocolate chip cookie is welcomed, along with seasonal breads and pies, yummy brownies and bars, and delicious jams and jellies.  These items can be dropped off  the day before or early morning at the start of the fair.  If pickup is needed, please call Sue at 831-9014 to arrange a time.  Happy baking! Silent Auction for the Christmas Fair The 2022 Santa’s Workshop is coming together. We are adding the silent auction back into the fair this year and we need your help! We’re pulling a silent auction together with a small number of gifts.  We’d like a few more!!  Do you have a place in the mountains to offer for skiers?  You can decide the number of days being offered and when the place will be available.  This could be limited to church family if you’d like.  What about a summer cottage for those who like to sit in the sunshine?  Again, you can decide what dates and can limit it to church family. Fall Church Cleanup Day-DATE CHANGE Due to expected rain on Saturday, Fall Clean up day has been re-scheduled for this Friday, November 11 starting at 9am.  We will be doing yard work, putting on storm windows and getting the church ready for winter.  Please come join us.  With enough people it won’t take long.

Chicken Pie Sale Work Day Hi Everybody,Hope you all can make it Thursday, 11/10 at 1 o’clock for assembling chicken and gravy pies for the freezer. The goal is to make approximately 50 chicken and gravy pies.  Thanks to Tuesday’s crew we are well on our way to being ready for the Christmas fair. Thank you to everyone who has had a part in making the Chicken Pie Sale Mission possible.  People are excited that they will be able to purchase our pies at the fair.Thank you, Mark 207-654-4931

Veterans Day Prayers                                                  Rev. Dr. Paul A. Day When Congress acted to move many holidays to Mondays, creating more long weekends, Veterans Day remained fixed on November 11. Originally it was called Armistice Day, in remembrance of the end of World War I combat at the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month. After World War II the observance was changed to Veterans Day in honor of the veterans of all wars.Guideposts offers Five Prayers for Veterans: 1) Prayer to Feel Honored “God, please let every veteran of our nation’s armed forces feel truly and appropriately honored by the attention and appreciation of their fellow citizens. Let no one feel forgotten or neglected. Let every man and woman, young or old, feel the deep and enduring gratitude of our nation and its inhabitants.” 2) Prayer to be Understood “Father God, You know that it can be difficult for a person who has returned from battle or stressful military service to reintegrate into ‘normal’ everyday life. You know that veterans can feel isolated and alone even in the midst of their friends and families because there are few around who understand their experience. So I ask You to place in the path of our veterans those who do understand (or strive to), that they may feel less alone. Remind them often that while their fellow human beings may never fully comprehend, You see, You know and You identify with them in everything.” 3) Prayer to be Healed “Lord, You know how deep a warrior’s wounds go. You know the loss that many of our veterans in body and soul. You know the memories that haunt them and the scars that many of them continue to carry.  Please bring healing to those veterans who still hurt. Please grant patience and wisdom to those around them who cannot understand but can sometimes help the healing process. Please apply both natural and supernatural medicine to their wounds.” 4) Prayer to be Rewarded “Father, please turn your gaze to those men and women who in their military service have sacrificed time, comfort, strength, ambition, health and prosperity for the peace and safety of family and friends and others they’ve never even known. Please reward them a hundredfold for all their sacrifice and service. Bless them far beyond all their expectations. Reward them richly for all they have given.” 5) Prayer to Know You “Almighty God, You know every veteran by name. You know their deeds, their hard work, and their perseverance. You know their needs, both material and spiritual. NYCC COVID-19 GUIDELINES 10/20/22 We have been following CDC guidelines at NYCC Generally, each person should have up-to-date vaccines and boosters, use masks when in large crowds, and practice social distancing. Masks are optional at NYCC but if you are not feeling well, we would appreciate your staying home, in particular for a Sunday worship service as the service can be seen on YouTube. If you do test positive for Covid-19 and you have minor symptoms, then you should isolate for 5 full days (day of symptoms is day 0, isolate for 5 full days thereafter) on day 6 take two antigen tests in a row spaced 48 hours apart and if they are both negative you can remove your mask. If you have a moderate case or severe case (needing to be hospitalized) please refer to the Maine CDC guidelines general information relating to Covid-19.

Hurricanes 2022 Emergency Appeal from the UCC Hello friends, The UCC has issued an appeal to support immediate needs for families and communities affected by Hurricanes Fiona and Ian.  If you would like to give to this cause, please send or bring a check to the church noting Hurricanes 2022 on your check. Your check should be written out to NYCC. Coffee Hour  We have gone back to our traditional coffee hour with homemade baked goods, fruit, cheese and crackers, etc.  We still have prepackaged goodies as well. We are very interested in getting a schedule in place which will rotate so that not one person is doing coffee hour every week.  We have a signup sheet at church in the gathering space, so please check it out and consider doing the set up and clean up and goodies, or share it with one person setting up, one person cleaning up, and a couple of people baking or bringing other goodies. Santa’s Workshop Fair Cookie Walk The Santa’s Workshop Fair is fast approaching on November 19th, and now is the perfect time to break out your favorite recipes and begin baking up a storm to delight our patrons for our Carol’s Cookie Walk and Baked Goods tables.  Decorated sugar cookies are always a big hit but even the simplest chocolate chip cookie is welcomed, along with seasonal breads and pies, yummy brownies and bars, and delicious jams and jellies.  These items can be dropped off  the day before or early morning at the start of the fair.  If pickup is needed, please call Sue at 831-9014 to arrange a time.  Happy baking!

Silent Auction for the Christmas Fair The 2022 Santa’s Workshop is coming together. We finally held a fair last year after 2 years without a fair.  Bet you can guess why!!  We would like to add the silent auction back into the fair this year and we need your help!We’re pulling a silent auction together with a small number of gifts.  We’d like a few more!!  Do you have a place in the mountains to offer for skiers?  You can decide the number of days being offered and when the place will be available.  This could be limited to church family if you’d like.  What about a summer cottage for those who like to sit in the sunshine?  Again, you can decide what dates and can limit it to church family. Jewelry Request for the Christmas Fair Are you sure of what’s in your jewelry box or drawer?  Got some items to go with a particular outfit and that’s no longer in your closet?  Tuesday Gals would adore having the items for our guests at the Santa’s Workshop fair.  What about lapel pins, rings, tie tacks, chains for men?  Please bring your items to Lyn in the church office.  Or stop in and chat with Tuesday Gals; we are in the Fellowship Hall starting at 10:00 am.
