Weekly News for February 16

News from Pastor Nancy
As you may know I fell hard on ice on Friday in my yard hitting the back of my head.   After spending the night at MMC flat on my back with a neck brace. I had a full head to pelvis CT Scan and an MRI.  They finally decided it was not a C1 fracture- yay!!!!!  I  am know home and hurt all over.  I will be using sick time this week to recuperate from aches and pains and a concussion. The plan for this weeks service is to replay one of our Hymn Sing services.I thank God for all your prayers, love and support. Pastor, Nancy
Covid Precautions Update
The Omicron variant is surging especially after the holidays with lots of wonderful family and friends indoor gatherings.  While it is reported to not be as awful as previous variants, there are way more people contracting it and the healthcare system is overwhelmed and vulnerable folks are still at high risk. At my request, the council has agreed to go entirely remote with worship for the month of January and part of February.  We will reassess at the February Council meeting. This decision was very difficult.  Many other churches and organizations are also agonizing over how to move forward.  In an abundance of caution and an effort to help and love our neighbors and each other,  join me in prayer that we will be through this soon knowing that God is always with us.  Please join us on YouTube as we gather for worship on Sundays at 9:30am.  I would really like to know who is there so if you sign in early please identify yourselves and there will be a couple spots for you to respond to during worship and we will take online prayer requests over chat during prayer time as well.In Christ, Pastor Nancy
Masks RequiredFollowing CDC and our own guidelines at NYCC masks are again required to be worn in the church building regardless of your vaccination status.  Please keep them on for the entire time that you are in the building.  Thank you.

Pastoral Search Team
Good news!  I have been in touch with Rev. Jonna Jenkins, the UCC representative who will be assisting us in the process of searching for a new minister.  Rev. Jenkins indicated that there are several avenues to choose from moving forward in this process.  The first is selecting a search committee.  It is her thought that the committee represent cross sections of the congregation and also that each member be interested in serving.  Might you be interested in serving?  Please take some time to think and pray about what this would mean to you, the church, and to the community.  Please give me a call if you would like to have a conversation with me at 207-829-5940.  We would love to have the first meeting with Rev. Jenkins sometime in March if at all possible.Thank you!  Marsha Heath, Moderator

Cleaning out Closets
Attention all former Christian Ed people. There is a closet in the basement that has housed CE items for many years. Trustees and Mark are in the process of cleaning it out. There are piles of box’s in the hallway right now. Mark has tried to reach out to some people about this but we have not gotten much response.  In the interest of moving this project along we are sending out a message to all. If no one is interested in the items in two weeks we will dispose of the items. If anyone has any questions you can call Cathy at 232-3082
Thank you,
Cathy B.

A big shout-out of thanks to Gary D. and Jim K. for replacing the very old and extremely heavy desk in the upstairs office with a new-to-us ergogenic computer desk. It is going to be so much better for all who use that space, It took a lot of physical effort to get the new desk up the stairs and then put back together. Now …..how to get rid of the old desk. ???????Thank you to Gary D. who acquired through an auction all of the new chairs, table and desks(there is one for the pastor’s office too) and Chris D. for helping Gary get it all to the church. The chairs that are being replaced have a new home to go to, so there will be no waste.
Community Food Pantry
The first Sunday of the month has been designated as Food Pantry Collection Sunday.  We will be focusing on non food items.  Current pantry needs include:

Paper towels                     Laundry Detergent
Toilet Paper                       Dish Soap
Tissues                              Diapers
Deodorant                         Pull-ups
Shampoo                           Baby Wipes
Conditioner                        Feminine Hygien ProductsPlease add your donation to the grocery cart in the Gathering Space. You can donate to the cart at any time.
New Timer Light Switches
The light switches in the upstairs bathrooms have been replaced with timer switches.  This means that when you open the door the light will automatically go on, and when you leave after 30 minutes the lights will automatically go off. But….if you are the only one around you can push the light switch button and turn off the lights yourself so the light does not stay on.  The timer will cycle and then turn on automatically next time.  If you go in and the light does not come on just push the button.

Mindfulness Practices for Equanimity
and Even Joy in Difficult Times

Wednesday, March 2nd, will begin an 8-week ‘lunch-hour’ study of mindfulness meditation being offered by the State Street UCC Church in Portland, Maine.  Led by Cheryl Anderson, the class will meet on Zoom, weekly on Wednesdays, 11:00am-12:30pm.  Each session will include guided meditation, teaching, discussion, and weekly suggestions for simple daily mindfulness practices to calm the mind and incline the heart toward joy.  The class will cover the basics of mindfulness meditation as well as provide support for more experienced meditators’ practice.  In this course, we will uncover habits of mind that interfere with our happiness and inner peace and learn practices to retrain the mind toward loving kindness, compassion for self and others, forgiveness, gratitude, equanimity, appreciative joy, and even mindful eating for weight loss.  Rev. Cheryl Anderson is a retired United Church of Christ pastor, having served a congregation in Connecticut for 22 years.  She is also trained and certified to teach Mindfulness Meditation (in the Buddhist tradition) by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield.  She teaches Christian spiritual practices as well and is certified by the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation to lead contemplative groups and retreats. Cheryl has also studied and taught Non-Violent Communication, and Appreciative Inquiry.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE CLASS
Cheryl Anderson is offering this study to raise money for a desperately needed new heating system at State Street Church, where she is a member.  The suggested donation for the course is $80; but any level of support will be welcome and appreciated.  Registration is limited, so pre-registration is necessary.
To register, you can either send your name and email address along with a donation check made out to State Street Church at PO Box 4037, Portland, ME 04101 or you can make the donation on line by going to https://statestreetchurch.org/giving/ and clicking on “Give Here.” Enter your donation amount in the Mindfulness Class box.  If you have questions about the class, and to receive some preparatory materials for the class, please email Cheryl directly at pastor.cheryl0319@gmail.com.
Grace Street Ministry
Calling all gloves!!!!!! you all have been unbelievably generous this fall as always. Now I am hoping that we can become the ‘glove church’.  We are in desperate need of warm gloves for men and women – both knitted and other.  I have found some at Job Lots that are not too expensive in the past.  Maybe you have another source.  Thank you in advance – I would love to be able to share with both Pastor Jeff and Pastor Karen.  Thank you, Pastor Nancy
